Bharatanatyam

Bharatanatyam is a classical dance form originating in Tamil Nadu. It is thought to have been created by Bharata Muni. In ancient times Bharatanatyam was performed by mandir (Hindu temple) Devadasis.

Kathakali

Kathakali (story and performance) is a form of dance-drama. It originated in the South Indian state of Kerala over 500 years ago. It is a spectacular combination of drama, dance, music and ritual.

Kuchipudi

Kuchipudi is a classical dance form from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana. Kuchipudi is the name of a small village in the Divi Taluq of Krishna district that the Villagers are practising this traditional dance form.

Kathak Dance

The Kathak Dance form arose from the Vaishnava devotees dancing to the episodes from Krishna's life. Originally a Northern Indian temple dance, it was transformed to a court dance in the Mughal era.

Folk Dances

Folk Dances are performed for every possible occasion, to celebrate the arrival of seasons, birth of a child, a wedding and festivals. The dances are very focused on gestures, postures, and expressions.

Bhangra

Bhangra is a form of music and dance that originated in the Punjab region of India. Bhangra dance began as a folk dance conducted by Punjabi farmers to celebrate the coming of Vaisakhi, a sikh festival.

Sattriya Dance

The Sattriya dance is believed to be a creation of the great Vaishnavite (bhakti) guru Srimanta Sankardeva considered the lead architect of Assamese literature and culture (one-act play, another creation of Sankardeva)

Odissi

Odissi is one of the oldest surviving forms of dance, with depictions of Odissi dancing dating back as far as the 1st century BC. Like other forms of Indian classical dance, the Odissi style traces its origins back to antiquity.

Manipuri Dance

Manipuri Dance, also known as Jagoi is one of the major Indian classical dance forms, named after the region of its origin – Manipur, the dance is also performed to themes related to Shaivism, Shaktism, dance drama of Radha-Krishna called Raslila.

Lavani Dance

Its from the state of the Maratha empire, Lavani is a dance form of Maharashtra. The female-oriented dance is a blend of traditional music and tales of deities. The origin of Lavani comes from the word Lavanya which means beauty.

Singhi Chham

Singhi Chham is a masked dance of Sikkim, depicting snow lion - the cultural symbol of the state. (Snow lion was decreed the guardian deity of the people of Sikkim by Guru Padamsambhava).

Dumhal

Dumhal is a dance performed by men of the Wattal tribe on specific occasions. The performers wear long colourful robes and tall conical caps that are studded with beads and shells.
